The association between beta-blocker therapy and daytime sleepiness in obstructive sleep apnoea

چکیده
Abstract Daytime sleepiness is a cardinal symptom of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and well-recognised side effect beta-blockers, therefore patients with OSA under this treatment may have worse sleepiness. However, the interaction between daytime beta-blockers use has not been thoroughly investigated in before. We analysed data 2183 individuals (1852 331 snorer controls) from 3 countries (Greece, Hungary Moldova). Medical history, including medication usage Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) were recorded. Patients controls divided into somnolent (ESS ≥ 11) non-somnolent < groups, association between-blocker group was multivariate logistic regression analysis adjusted for confounders. Sensitivity analyses performed each cohort, severity subgroups, who did take statins those had polysomnography as diagnostic test. There no relationship beta-blocker ( p = 0.24) or control 0.64) groups. These results similar sensitivity (all > 0.05). ESS related to BMI ρ 0.25), total time 0.07), AHI 0.32), oxygen desaturation index 0.33) minimum saturation – 0.32, all 0.05) OSA, higher hypertension, diabetes cerebro/cardiovascular disease took In general, are associated increased OSA. Thus, diagnosis should discourage initiation treatment, if it clinically indicated.

Sleep and daytime sleepiness in upper airway resistance syndrome compared to obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.
This study has investigated differences in the nocturnal sleep and daytime sleepiness among patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS), upper airway resistance (UARS), sleep hypopnoea syndrome, and normal control subjects, using sleep scoring and spectral activity analysis of the electroencephalogram (EEG). Twelve nonobese males with UARS aged 30-60 yrs were recruited. These subject...

Our understanding of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) has advanced much beyond that of the condition being a noisy breathing abnormality during sleep which classically presents with daytime sleepiness, to a condition with numerous potentially significant downstream sequelae and multisystem manifestations. The relationship between OSA and metabolic dysfunction is a moving target. Cross sectional s...
متن کاملInsulin resistance and daytime sleepiness in patients with sleep apnoea.
BACKGROUND Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), obesity and insulin resistance (IR) occur frequently in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). We hypothesised that in these patients, EDS is a marker of IR, independent of obesity. METHODS We studied 44 patients with OSAS (22 with and 22 without EDS) matched for age (+/-5 years), body mass index (BMI +/-3 kg/m(2)) and severity o...
متن کاملDaytime sleepiness and polysomnographic variables in sleep apnoea patients.
Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is not invariably present in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). The aim of the present study was to investigate polysomnographic determinants of EDS in patients with OSAS. EDS was assessed using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT). Patients showed EDS whenever the ESS score was >10 and the MSLT sco...
متن کاملSleepiness in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea - daytime course and impact of nocturnal respiratory events.
BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a condition leading to excessive daytime sleepiness. The aim of the study was a) to study course of daytime sleepiness in patients with OSA and b) to find the most important nocturnal polysomnography parameters influencing daytime sleepiness in OSA. METHODS The cohort consisted of forty-five patients (6 women, 39 men) diagnosed with OSA. All patien...
